Project: Galloway

During this full basement renovation I thought it would be fun to incorporate a unique piece of art. To add dimension and interest I decided to include a niche in the wall with electrical access, for a backlit art piece. To create the art, we enlarged a beautiful photograph onto a translucent material called Duratrans for the light to shine through. A white Plexi-Glass was used as a backing and a clear protective layer is placed in front of the image to increase strength and durability. Then we had custom metal box with a minimalist frame made to fit the niche and house the finished image. We debated different lighting source and ruled out fluorescent tubes because they didn’t create even lighting, required ventilation, and could even produce a humming noise. Instead, we used a new to the market, LED grid panel which provides uniform, diffused light, emits less heat and energy and does not produce any noise. Another innovative feature of the LED grid is that it can be dimmed allowing the art to be “turn down” if you are watching a movie. This art piece is not only a fabulous accent but is functional as well.

The lightbox is an stunning focal point in our basement. It's always one of the first things people comment on when they first come into the space. I love the flexibility that the design offers to change the picture over time, and that it's soft glow will always provide that "wow" factor, no matter what image is used.

Working with the Sealy Design team has been a very positive experience. Working from an initial concept through construction and styling, each of the different team members I've dealt (and there have been several!) has always been very available and easy to work with. I really appreciated their professional, yet relaxed and easygoing working style.
